{"id":48,"date":"2015-05-27T09:35:28","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T09:35:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/?p=48"},"modified":"2015-05-27T09:35:28","modified_gmt":"2015-05-27T09:35:28","slug":"how-to-setup-a-highly-available-scvmm-2012-r2-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/how-to-setup-a-highly-available-scvmm-2012-r2-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"How to setup a Highly-Available SCVMM 2012 R2 environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You can have a VMM environment Highly-Available not only from a host perspective (meaning live migration of the VM with VMM installed) but you can get HA also at the application level, in case there are issues with OS inside the VM, VMM starts on the other node. You can have two or more SCVMM Management server in a cluster, but only one node will be active.<\/p>\n<p>Before you start the installation of VMM there are some prerequisites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a VMM Service Account in Active Directory which has to be added to Local Administrators Group on the servers where VMM will be installed.<\/li>\n<li>Install two VMs for VMM with Windows Server 2012 R2 and configure the Failover Cluster feature .<\/li>\n<li>Install all the VMM prerequisites: ADK and SQL Native Client.<\/li>\n<li>Create a Container in AD DS for Distributed Key Management because VMM stores Run As Accounts in its database to manage VM hosts, file servers, VMs and other credential required resources.<\/li>\n<li>Highly-Available SQL Database is preffered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For creating the Container in AD you have to follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Active Director Service Interfaces Editor (adsiedit.msc), right click the ADSI Edit object and select Connect To<\/li>\n<li>Connecting to Default Naming Context is enough in most of the environments\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-49\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/adsiedit-300x297.png\" alt=\"adsiedit\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/adsiedit-300x297.png 300w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/adsiedit-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/adsiedit.png 395w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Expand the connection object and right click the domain&#8217;s container and choose New &#8211; Object<a href=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/newobj.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-51\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/newobj-300x178.png\" alt=\"newobj\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/newobj-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/newobj.png 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Select container as the class and Click Next.<\/li>\n<li>Provide a valuer for the name of the container (VMM for example) and click finish<\/li>\n<li>Right-Click the container and select Properties and copy the distinguishedName property which you&#8217;ll need later during the installation of VMM<a href=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/vmmdkm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-52\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/vmmdkm-268x300.png\" alt=\"vmmdkm\" width=\"268\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/vmmdkm-268x300.png 268w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/vmmdkm.png 417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After you configure the Failover Cluster feature on the VMs where VMM Management Server will be installed you can proceed with the installation of VMM.<\/p>\n<p>You can start the VMM installer which will automatically detect the \u00a0cluster and will ask you if you want to install the VMM Management Server in a highly-available mode.<a href=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/clustervmm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-53\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/clustervmm-300x225.png\" alt=\"clustervmm\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/clustervmm-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/clustervmm.png 749w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After that, the installation continues almost in the same was as for a Standalone VMM Server, except for the Distributed Key Management screen \u00a0and the VMM Cluster role where you have configure a name and an IP Address<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/clusterconfig1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-56\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/clusterconfig1-300x224.png\" alt=\"clusterconfig\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/clusterconfig1-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/clusterconfig1.png 757w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the installation is finished on the first node you can run the setup on the second node.
