We will do this with Powerhsell, running the command <i>Add-WindowsFeature \u2013name ad-domain-services \u2013IncludeManagementTools<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Install-ADDSDomainController\u00a0<\/i>to configure the server as Domain Controller.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image008_thumb1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-31\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image008_thumb1-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"clip_image008_thumb1\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image008_thumb1-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image008_thumb1.jpg 613w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first step after finishing the configuration of the new Domain Controller is to move the FSMO roles from the Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller. First we have to move the Schema master Role through\u00a0Active Directory Schema Master, but before that we have to register\u00a0Schmmgmt.dll with\u00a0regsrv32 schmmgmt.dll command.<\/p>\n<p>After running the command open\u00a0Active Directory Schema Master console, right click\u00a0Active Directory Schema and choose\u00a0<i>Change Domain Controller.<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image010_thumb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image010_thumb-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"clip_image010_thumb\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image010_thumb-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image010_thumb.jpg 627w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After this we&#8217;ll have to right click\u00a0Active Directory Schema and choose\u00a0<i>Operation Masters\u00a0<\/i> to move the role on the new server.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image012_thumb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-33\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image012_thumb-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"clip_image012_thumb\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image012_thumb-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image012_thumb.jpg 627w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Same step (change domain controller first and after that moving the role) has to be done for all the other roles, the difference is that Domain Naming Master is moved with\u00a0<i>Active Directory Domains and Trusts console and\u00a0ID Master, PDC Emulator, Infrastructure Master with\u00a0<i>Active Directory Users and Computers console.<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>In the end to make sure that all the roles are on the new Domain Controller we run the\u00a0<em>netdom query fsmo<\/em> command.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image022_thumb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-34\" src=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image022_thumb-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"clip_image022_thumb\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image022_thumb-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/michaelstoica.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/clip_image022_thumb.jpg 627w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Upgrading Domain Controllers to a newer version is a step that most of the administrators will have to do it.
